2019 College Park parkrun #2

Sorry for being a bit late getting this up. I couldn't quite finish before I had to leave to make it to the football game (what an awful no-call to end the game).

I'm expecting us to have 35 athletes running at WCACs next Saturday and we had 30 of those athletes show up today for this tuneup race, so I'm very happy with our turnout. I believe I heard from everybody who was not able to make it so no concerns there.

Let's get right to the results; I'll save my thoughts for the end.

As always, in blue, I have noted all athletes who set a new PR (personal record) in the cross country 5k (3.1 mile). In red, I have noted all athletes who set a new SB (season best), but not PR, in the cross country 5k. And in silver, I have noted all athletes who set a new PCB (personal course best) for the Paint Branch Trail 5k out-and-back 5k course.

Open Race

Final Thoughts

If there'd been teams at this parkrun, we would've scored a perfect 15!

Great job to everybody today. I was impressed to see a number of PRs, including from our top two runners today. I know both Jayden and Dawson felt like they needed to have a bounce-back race today and they got that and then some.

Nathaniel has been our manager this year but started doing a bit of running a few weeks ago and decided he would come out and see how he'd fare in a 5k. Considering he tied his PR with very little training, certainly nothing geared specifically toward the 5k or toward peaking at this point in the season, he did very well!

Lucas broke 23 minutes for the first time, Max skipped the 25s, Ian skipped the 27s and the 26s, and Jaquada skipped the 27s. Ian, in particular, has stood out to me during the past week or so in practice as he seems to be gaining some comfort with his stride and his turnover has improved dramatically.

Quick Preview

I saved one final thought for here. The meet info for the WCAC Championship is already on the team website, though I will send a separate link tomorrow just to make sure everybody sees it. In there, you can see the lineups for next Saturday.

The 7th spot on varsity is yet to be decided. I spoke to Chris early this week and gave him the option to run in the freshman race. As the 7th man on varsity he wouldn't score for us, but he earned that spot and I certainly was not going to take that experience away from him. He ultimately decided he will run in the freshman race, which will certainly give our freshman team a good chance to compete in the team standings.

That means the 7th spot is between Julius and Jaiden. I spoke to both of them this week and offered them two choices. They could use today as a race-off with the winner taking varsity, or they could use today as a chance to experiment and I would base my decision on Wednesday's workout. They both decided to leave it in my hands to make my best judgement on Wednesday, so that is what I will do. They certainly didn't make my decision any easier today with both of them running new PRs and finishing within 10 seconds of each other.

Take care of your bodies and your minds this week, gentlemen. Let's finish this season and show the rest of the conference just how much work we put in this year.
