2017 Woodward Relays

The boys got an early dismissal on Tuesday to head up to Georgetown Prep for the Woodward Relays. Nine teams were in attendance, each were permitted six boys teams and an unlimited number of girls teams for the relay event where athletes were paired off and took turns completing the 1-mile circuit three times each. After the relay races, all remaining male and female athletes had the opportunity to run that same loop three times for what would amount to a little more than a full 5k.

It was very hot during the boys relay race and Georgetown Prep was thankfully prepared with full trash cans full of water with sponges so athletes could cool themselves off a bit between turns running the course. We also were able to use the water and Gatorade left over from the Seahawk Invitational to keep our guys hydrated through the event. Sometime during the girls race, the clouds began racing in. Our athletes who did not run the relay made it through the first loop of the course when the race was called due to lightning strikes in the vicinity. I got mile-splits for those athletes who had reached the mile mark before the race was ended.

On the relay, the mile mark came before the exchange zone, and I took splits at the mile mark. The very first split for each relay team (leadoff leg) is an accurate mile time. The 2nd through 5th splits are approximately 1.04 miles and the 6th split (anchor leg) is approximately 1.07 miles. Rather than show the full splits, I will only show the mile conversion for each time, meaning that if you add the six splits I provide below you will not reach the total time for each relay - just a heads up so there is no confusion.

Boys Relay

First, here are the results for the relay teams. I will show individual splits below. The number in front of each duo signifies their place in the relay race. There were 43 total teams representing nine schools in the event:

18 Matthew Metz (Sr.) & John Ahalt (Sr.) - 39:03.12

19 Anthony Perry (So.) & Thomas Parsons (So.) - 39:07.64

38 James Hudson (Fr.) & Gavin Foran (Fr.) - 44:32.84

39 Steven Camarano (Fr.) & Ashby Ervin (Jr.) - 44:46.90

42 Robert Gordon (Fr.) & Creedence Jackson (Fr.) - 50:08.40

43 London Bailey (So.) & Manuel Legaspi (Jr.) - 51:03.36

Splits:

The first time is the total running time each for each athletes. Inside the bracket are the athletes converted mile splits based on the distance covered on each leg of the race.

Anthony Perry - 3.08mi in 18:36.7 [(1) 5:40, (2) 6:11, (3) 6:13]

This was not an easy event. Our quality workout day is typically Wednesday, so to move that up a day really does shock the system for many athletes. Still, I'm happy with most of our performances and am very impressed by Anthony's improvement since last year. He is dealing with a back problem, which he ran through on Tuesday, so hopefully resting the rest of this week and getting treatment from our trainers will allow him to be healthy enough to compete next week at Landon.

Open Race

These are the mile splits for those athletes who reached me at the mile mark in the open race on Tuesday. Keep in mind that though this is only a 1-mile time, the boys ran the first mile expecting two more miles to follow. Had they gone into the race knowing they would only run one mile, they would have run even faster.

Hayward Smith-Cassidy - 7:02.92

Nathaniel Ager - 7:50.81

Keme Gbemiye-Etta - 7:53.06

Lucas Arzayas - 8:05.52

Drew Robertson - 8:17.25

James Carroll - 8:22.81

Cameron Polk - 8:24.52

Bodior Elliott and Glenn Smithson did not reach me before the the race was called so I was unable to get a split for them, though they both did run.

Our next race will be at Landon next Saturday, September 16. I am very hopeful that the weather will stop getting in the way of our JV runners as I am very interested to see how they will perform in a full 5k. We are allowed more varsity athletes at Landon than usual, so, in the absence of any injuries, our varsity team at Landon will be:

Anthony Perry

Matthew Metz

John Ahalt

Thomas Parsons

Ashby Ervin

Gavin Foran

James Hudson

Steven Camarano
